Nina Mennies

I am a senior at Pitt pursuing a major in Urban Studies as well as minors in Economics and Applied Statistics and a certificate in Public and Professional Writing. I have had a longstanding interest in food insecurity, and this issue has been by primary focus throughout my time at Pitt. Currently, I am working towards defending a Bachelor of Philosophy thesis focused on evaluating the organizational structures, capacities, and impact measurement methods of Pittsburgh’s food aid organizations, and I was selected as a 2022-23 Newman Civic Fellow in recognition of my ongoing research and dedication to the field of food insecurity studies.
I think it is crucial to reevaluate our current food aid networks, both on a governmental and organizational level, as well as work to address the inequalities that are both causes and effects of food insecurity. I intend to carry my passion forward into my graduate studies, and hope to
meaningfully contribute to the reduction of food insecurity through the development of equitable public policy.
